The vast majority of our players are on "rec" soccer teams formed without tryouts. Every child registering on time is placed on a team. These teams play only against other recreational teams. Recreational soccer is intended to be fun and low key for players, coaches, and parents.
Children U-7 through U11 (6 to 10 years old on August 1) play Mod soccer. Mod soccer games are played on a field that is about half the size of a regular soccer field. Four to nine players from each team are on the field at a time, with one being a goalkeeper. On the field team sizes are based on age: U7/8 - 4, U9 - 5, U10 - 6, and U11 - 9. Games are played in two 25 or 30-minute halves with a 5-minute break. Slide tackling is not allowed and there are only indirect kicks after a foul and no penalty kicks (except for U11). Games are usually played on Saturday and occasionally on Friday evenings and Sundays. The Club provides the referees and many are older Club players.
Players U-12 and up play full-field regulation soccer. A regulation soccer team has 11 players with one of those players as a goalkeeper. The field size varies, but is generally approximately 110 yards long and 60 yards wide. Rules follow the basic laws of soccer. The length of the game goes up with age to a maximum of two 45 minute halves. All FIFA (the international soccer organization) rules are in effect.
All BIYSC Recreational soccer coaches are volunteers, in most cases a parent of one of the participants. BIYSC encourages coaches to get training and offers free licensing clinics throughout the year.
